How to Tell People You’re Having an Adult-Only Wedding

Friday, August 9th, 2024

Are you thinking of having an adult-only wedding?! You’re not alone! We’ve all seen the TikTok video of children ruining wedding cakes, first dances, and other big wedding moments, right?! But, it can be hard to communicate your adult-only wedding with guests! As Houston’s best wedding photographers, I fully support you in your decision and want to help you bring your wedding dreams to life! So here are a few tips when communicating to your guests that you are having an adult-only wedding!

This biggest tip is to make it clear – but not to feel the need to explain “why”. If you blame it on budget, sometimes people will offer to pay for their kids to be there. If it’s a space concern, they may tell you their children can sit in their lap. So focus on being direct, and don’t feel like you have to give an explanation!

How to Tell People You’re Having an Adult-Only Wedding

Addressing Invitations Very Specifically

When sending out your wedding invitations, it’s important to be clear about who exactly is invited. To communicate that the event is adults-only, you’ll want to address the invitations very specifically, listing only the names of the people you wish to invite. Avoid using the word “family” as most people would assume that means including children. By addressing the invitations very specifically, you set the expectation that the invitation is exclusive to the adults!

Listing Reserved Seats on RSVP Cards

Are you including RSVP cards in your invitations?! This is a great way to let your guests know the wedding is adults-only. On the RSVP cards, you’ll want to indicate the number of seats reserved for each party. For example, if you are inviting a couple, you might write “We have reserved 2 seats in your honor.” This provides your guests with a clear message that the invitation is extended only to the adults listed on the card, helping to avoid any confusion about whether children are welcome.

Having One-on-One Conversations with Guests Who Have Children

To ensure your guests with children fully understand your preference for an adult-only wedding, you might want to consider a personal conversation with them! Reach out to the guests individually to explain your decision in a friendly and considerate manner! You’ll be able to address any questions and let them know how much you value their presence at your wedding.

Mentioning the Policy on Your Wedding Website For an Adult-Only Wedding

Do you have a wedding website?! This is a great place to share the details about your adult-only wedding. Include a note in the FAQ section Your wedding website is an excellent place to share details about your celebration, including your preference for an adults-only event. For example, put on your website FAQs that you cannot accommodate children under [x years] old. You can also have a note,  “To allow all wedding guests, including parents, a night of relaxation we respectfully ask that no children attend. Adults only please!” This ensures the information is clear and accessible to all guests.

Giving Parents Plenty of Notice to Make Arrangements

Finding childcare can be a big concern for some families! Be sure to give your guests with children ample time to arrange for childcare, especially if they will need to travel for your wedding. Make sure to inform them of your adult-only wedding at least 3 to 4 months in advance!
